Out Of The Storm Senior Housing was founded in response to the devastation caused by Superstorm Sandy and the significant impact it had on senior citizens throughout Staten Island, NY.
After witnessing the challenges many seniors faced in securing safe and stable housing, founder Claudette Duff recognized the need for a more compassionate and community-focused housing alternative for elderly residents.
Her vision became Out Of The Storm Senior Housing—a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing affordable senior housing in small-group residential homes located within local neighborhoods.
These homes offer seniors a family-like, safe, and supportive living environment designed to promote comfort, companionship, dignity, and independence.
Affordable Housing Alternatives for Senior Citizens
Unlike large institutional settings, Out Of The Storm Senior Housing focuses on creating welcoming homes for three to four residents in peaceful residential communities. This unique housing model helps reduce isolation while giving seniors the opportunity to enjoy a more personal and connected living experience.
In November 2012, with the help of volunteers from across the country, the organization renovated and opened its first senior housing residence in Tottenville, Staten Island. In March 2014, Chapin House in Dongan Hills officially opened, expanding the organization’s ability to serve seniors in need of affordable housing and supportive living options.
A Growing Nonprofit Dedicated to Senior Support
Thanks to the dedication of volunteers, donors, and community supporters, Out Of The Storm Senior Housing became an established 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization by 2019. Today, the organization continues its mission of providing quality rental homes for seniors while supporting independence, safety, and community-based living for elderly residents throughout Staten Island.
